Eurodad: The Debt Games

Is there A way out of The Maze?

Challenge

When a country faces unsustainable sovereign debt, it cannot simply declare bankruptcy like a private entity. To avoid default, governments may keep borrowing, raise taxes, mobilize domestic resources for revenue, or cut public spending, which can negatively impact human rights, especially women’s rights. These measures usually only delay default. Pre-emptive debt restructuring is often avoided due to potential credit rating downgrades and market access loss. Upon default, a government must renegotiate debt terms with its creditors.

Solution

We created an editorial illustration style with a strong focus on visual metaphors that would work in a video but also as standalone campaign graphics to extend the life and reach of their communication.

The Story of the Mava Foundation

...

Challenge

The Mava Foundation is one of the most important enablers in global conservation. Since their birth nearly 30 years ago their philanthropy and innovation has shaped and nurtured conservation as we understand it today. We were approached by Mava, following the recommendation of one of our clients, to create an animation of their story for the event to mark the closing of the foundation and to remain on their legacy website. It was an honour and we were determined to create something memorable and authentically Mava.

Solution

To create anything of high quality we need to work with someone who is equally determined and passionate. Luckily for us Nathalie Cadot at the Mava Foundation was able to provide expert advice and guidance as we seeked to distil 30 years into 3 minutes.

In order to faithfully recreate Luc Hoffmann and his son Andre we worked with archive photography. The overall approach was to create a sprawling natural canvas with a painted feel to the illustration. Wide inspiring shots were balanced with closer crops of people and nature to emphasise the importance of each person and place. Finally we produced a custom soundscape for the final animation which is available in English and French.

They approached us to create a series of 3 animations to educate adults responsible for the care of vulnerable children across the world. Each video would then be translated by us into 6 different languages.

Solution

Working with Keeping Children Safe we designed storytelling approach to the learning content that would depict recognisable scenarios to aid understanding and emotional connection with the subject matter and ultimately the children in need of safe support.

Illumina Dragen

Product explainer commissioned by Illumina America

Challenge

DRAGEN analysis offers accurate, comprehensive, and efficient secondary analysis of next-generation sequencing data. It reduces the need for additional computing infrastructure and enables bioinformaticians to focus more on analysis that matters. Our task was to explain how DRAGEN works within the environment of a typical lab, making the content informative and engaging.

Solution

We created a realistic character animation style to increase human connection and combined this with soft gradients in keeping with the brand guides and providing a futuristic feel.

When featuring the Next Seq machine we created a 3D model to ensure that the depiction and motion felt natural to the way the machine operates.

The final animation was translated into Spanish, Portuguese and French Canadian.

Environmental DNA Case Study in Geneva

Context

Scientists studying environmental DNA often analyze trace amounts of DNA per species in a given sample, without knowing the types or abundance of species represented. With next-generation sequencing (NGS), you can profile thousands of species simultaneously from a single sample. NGS also offers the sensitivity needed to detect eDNA present at low levels in the environment.

In contrast, physical surveys of natural environments require manual data collection and can be disruptive. Traditional DNA methods, such as bacterial cloning and Sanger sequencing, provide only a limited snapshot of a given sample. These approaches can be time-consuming and costly, and are not effective for processing large or complex samples.

Filming

We planned and undertook a complex film shoot in Geneva, Switzerland. Combining interviews with in-the-field scientific experiments. We shot to two cine cameras and a drone to provide a range of shots and perspectives.

Following the shoot a rough edit was compiled with a transcript for legal review and then following that we were able to complete a full grading and edit process

Spectrum: Sharing Public Health Policies to Reduce Inequalities and Harm

Challenge

Spectrum is a research consortium held by the Usher Institute within The University of Edinburgh’s Medical school. Spectrum researches and collects evidence to prevent diseases caused by unhealthy goods, including tobacco, alcohol and unhealthy food. Usher Institute came to us to produce an animation explaining how their research works and to raise awareness for the effects of unhealthy activities and products on public health and inequality within communities.

Solution

We produced a characterful animation to communicate the Usher Institute’s message. Each scene has been designed with its own concept to help illustrate the information conveyed in the voice-over. We hope this animation successfully raises awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and unhealthy foods.

Fauna & Flora International

What does biodiversity mean?

Challenge

Fauna & Flora International (FFI) is a wildlife conservation charity working around the globe to protect biodiversity. FFI has found that although biodiversity loss is one of the biggest threats to earth, it is widely undiscussed and misunderstood. So they came to us to create an explainer video answering the main questions thousands of people ask daily – what is biodiversity? and why is biodiversity loss bad?

Solution

We produced a video that has a fun and impactful collage style. A mixture of footage and imagery was animated in a way that bounces off the soundtrack to engage the audience with the video’s message. The footage, supplied by FFI, highlights expert knowledge and opinions explaining why biodiversity is so important, giving the footage an informative and personal feel.

We hope this video successfully explains what biodiversity is, while encouraging an open discussion surrounding the threat of biodiversity loss to our planet.
