The International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) approached us with an idea to give a voice to young climate activists in some of the least developed countries in the world. These individuals are powerful advocates for their countries and the loss and damage their countries are experiencing from a climate change they have not created.
Working directly with Gladys, Solomon, Gabriel and Ineza we were able to create a powerful series of animations that are authentic, create global engagement and have a clear call to action.
Each animation has a custom designed music score, feature the voices of the activists and a reveal from film to animation at the conclusion of the video.

Working in partnership with a local film crew in Freetown we were able to use this film to explore in more depth the reasons for climate change induced loss and damage in Sierra Leone.
Global Reach - Local Language Versions

Solomon Islands - Pijin
The use of Pijin was identified as an important requirement of the project. Many native Pijin speakers in The Solomon Islands do not fully understand the reasons behind climate change and what they can do improve the life changes of their families. Pijin enables community outreach and the education of all.

Rwanda - Kinyarwanda
Kinyarwanda is spoken by more than 10 million people in Rwanda and is important to support the Green Fighter educational outreach program with children and rural communities. Helping to create the next generation of climate activists. It will also help with the wider dissemination of the animation across the country.

Sierra Leone - Krio
Krio is spoken by 87% of the population in Sierra Leone and unities the different ethnic groups in the country and is the primary language of communication for Sierra Leoneans at home and across the world.
Syngenta approached us to make an animation to explain some of the innovative work coming out of their biocontrols division. In particular, their RNAi solution that find answers in nature allowing specific insects such as the Colorado Potato Beetle to be targeted but beneficial insects and pollinators to be left unharmed; with no damage to the surrounding environment. The challenge was to communicate the science and potential in a way that also brought to the centre its environmental potential.
Solution
We created a hand drawn animation feel to make the style and motion feel organic in line with the messaging of the animation. The Science is presented with simple visuals and the avoidance of as much jargon or technical language as possible. Where possible the animation is anchored by the landscape and environment to draw attention to RNAi as a solution found in nature and sympathetic to nature.
The NWL Maternity Transformation Programme were looking to record a video series around reduced fetal movements in multiple languages. The objective for the films was to raise awareness among the community of the signs to look out for if you notice that your baby’s movements have slowed down or the usual pattern has changed, as this may be a sign that your baby is unwell and needs help urgently.
Each language version was recorded with a native speaker within the NHS staff who currently works across specialisms in the maternity team. We had to ensure the films had subtitles in the language being spoken.

Translation
The video was delivered in the following language versions: English, Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Lithuanian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi, Urdu, Romanian, Somali, Bengali, Tamil, Turkish & Polish.
British Sign Language
Sign languages use hand and arm movements, facial expressions, and body positions to convey meaning.
Sign language is the native language of many people who are Deaf. Some do not read or understand written language well — especially at the speed of most captions.
Some people will want to have sign language and captions at the same time.
Not everyone who is Deaf knows sign language, especially if they became Deaf or hard-of-hearing later in life. Some people use “lip reading” to help understand speech, though that cannot be replied upon for accessibility.

Testimonial
"It has been a pleasure collaborating with The Like Minded on our Reduced Fetal Movements video series. Despite the restrictions Covid left us with they listened and accommodated our every need resulting in a short video in 20 languages that we are really pleased with! I would highly recommend them. Thank you to Nick, Yasmin and the team!"
Evans Cycles is the UK’s leading specialist bike retailer and in 2021 celebrates 100 years since the company was formed by F W Evans in his original shop in Kennington Road in London. Throughout that time they’ve been at the heart of UK cycling; from original hand built F W Evans frames, through to their range of modern in house bike brands Pinnacle and Hoy, and the thousands of UK cyclists that have worked, shopped, and ridden with them.
In celebration of their centenary, Evans Cycles approached us for an animation to highlight the cycling milestones of the past 100 years. They wanted something dynamic and striking that seamlessly flowed through the decades, while always making the bicycle the hero of the scene.
Solution
Everything from the clothing to the soundscape to the cars (not to mention the bikes!) was carefully considered when designing each scene to make sure they were instantly recognisable.
The piece was animated using a blend of 2D, 3D and frame-by-frame animation. Often we constructed 3D scenes as a reference for our 2D and frame-by-frame motion, allowing us to create interesting but believable camera movements while retaining the loose, organic motion you achieve with 2D and frame-by-frame animation.

Sound Design
We built a custom score for the piece that seamlessly changes through the decades making each scene clearly identifiable.
The audio sets the mood and pace across the animation ebbing and flowing from leisurely cycles to a crescendo at the 2012 London Olympics.
Finally, the sound effects of the aeroplane tearing across the sky or the crowd in the velodrome complete the atmosphere.
We collaborated with the team at the Green Alliance – an environmental think tank for a conference animation. We worked to develop a brief that presents the key findings of their research, posing critical questions around the move to a circular economy in the UK. To demonstrate the lack of government targets in meeting the need for reduction in resources we showed how this can be changed.
Solution
Aimed at key audiences in large businesses, civil service and advocates across other organisations we created a story centred around earth to demonstrate our relentless consumption of natural resources and the effect on the planet. By highlighting areas for positive change that help to drive a circular economy we sign post the need to reduce waste in half by 2050 in order to meet our commitments.
The coronavirus pandemic has generated an unprecedented amount of health information. People worldwide have been desperately looking up the symptoms online, how it’s transmitted, how to prevent it and how to treat it. Bupa Health approached us to create an explainer animation to riase awareness of this and provide a few top tips on what to look out for when searching for health information online.
Solution
Working with the Bupa team we developed a concept showing our central character who searches via mobile for health information. He turns detective and starts to analyse the information sources and highlight the areas to look out for. While not all information is digested online much of the misinformation we receive can spread quickly via digital channels so it’s important to ask key questions.
Iontas uses its proprietary technology to accelerate antibody drug discovery. We were asked to create an animation to educate a student and postgraduate audience in the potential and application of Phage Display.
Solution
The animation needed to balance the objectives of scientific accuracy with engagement to a partially informed audience. In order to reduce the cognitive load of the viewer we designed a concept that used a limited colour palette with a lot of negative space. The motion is kept to the minimum required to accurately match the animation to the voiceover and avoid unnecessary distraction.
The Trussell Trust approached us to help them to create a series of training videos that would really help to onboard their food bank volunteers across the country. The videos needed to be adaptable, friendly and informative; whilst also reflecting the diversity of volunteers and the clients of food banks.
Solution
We designed a plan to combine film and animation. We filmed on location at two food banks to capture the first hand experiences of existing volunteers and to see the food banks in action. We then combined this with a friendly animation style that helped us to make the learning content relatable and adaptable to future changes.
Explainer Animation to Assist Members with new Legislation
Challenge
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society released a brand new system to assist their members with the yearly process of revalidating their skills.
In addition we were tasked with providing the first animations since the launch of new branding. Requiring us to create a modern and striking articulation of the new guidelines in animation.
The animation combined an explanation of the process, with a more in-depth look at the software developed to support members.
The Royal Pharmaceutical Society Revalidation video needed to engage a wide audience range and to be understood with voice-over and in mute-play.
Solution
We managed to convey complex messaging simply, utilising abstract shapes and the new vivid RPS brand colours.
In other areas, it was essential to display scenes of the actual app which we dovetailed seamlessly into the Royal Pharmaceutical Society Revalidation animation.
Captions were woven throughout allowing the video to be understood while muted. Placing the captions within the scene rather than as subtitles ensured that they remained a focal point of each scene.
Autistic people are 4 times more likely to suffer from anxiety than non-autistic people. This coupled with a lack of understanding around autism can lead to some difficult situations to navigate. Autistica wanted an animation for World Autism Awareness Week that broadened understanding of what its like to suffer from anxiety while autistic.
Solution
Told from the perspective of a person with autism and anxiety, the animation clarifies what the triggers can be and what anxiety feels like.
The bright, bold and poppy animation, scribble motif and stylised characters allowed us to clearly convey emotions (which is important for autistic people) without being unsettling or anxiety-inducing in itself!
